ZERO-WASTE TO LANDFILL

Don’t let anything go to waste

The UK, along with 70+ other countries, has committed to being net zero by 2050.

That means that we’ll need to remove as much carbon from the atmosphere as we produce. It’s an ambitious target, and one that businesses are going to have to play a big role in.

Zero-waste to landfill is one of the most environmentally positive policies you can take. It means diverting all your waste away from landfill – by finding ways to reuse, recycle, or repurpose it – and making your organisation 100% waste-free.

It’s not as hard as you think, and it benefits more than just the planet, but to take full advantage you need an expert sustainability partner in your corner.

Experienced partners

Sustainability has always been a big part of the Commercial DNA. With decades of experience and expertise, we’ll find the quick-wins and long-term strategies to help you become a greener business.

FIRST-HAND EXPERIENCE

We started our own sustainability journey in 2006 and we’ve been learning and innovating ever since. Continuing to push boundaries for ourselves, we’re aiming to become net zero 22 years before the UK’s deadline.

WIDE-RANGING EXPERTISE

Not only can we help you eliminate your landfill waste, but our sustainability consultants can also help with carbon footprinting, renewable energy solutions, EV vehicles, greywater harvesting, and much more.

TAILOR-MADE PLANS

We approach every new project with a fresh perspective, which means yours will be completely customised to your business – to achieve maximum environmental impact with minimal disruption to you.

Overcoming the obstacles

Zero waste to landfill is, for most businesses, a big operational change. By drawing on our own experience, and that of supporting our clients, we can get you there stress-free.

Lack of awareness
Some solutions and strategies are better than others, but if you’re not familiar with the journey then it can be a daunting project to embark on. We’ll work closely with you to find the most suitable route.
Limited expertise
In a relatively new area of environmental improvement, and one which touches every part of your business, even your in-house sustainability champions are going to need an expert on side.
Multiple waste streams
Different materials require different approaches, to ensure that they’re managed in the most sustainable and responsible way. And if you already have external waste management partners, consolidating everything into one policy will take time and energy to complete.
Regulatory complexity
Waste management is often subject to a complex web of compliance, at community, local, and national levels. Navigating regulations incorrectly, especially if operating in multiple regions, can incur fines and other legal penalties.
Lack of transparency
It’s hard to know where your waste is currently going and, therefore, what steps you need to take. One of the first steps in our process is to conduct an audit and assess the current waste management scenario, after which we can start reducing and eliminating any landfill destinations.

Don’t just take
our word for it…

Commercial deliver. We are fortunate to work with some amazing partners. Here are some examples of great things we hear every day.

Commercial made what H&M had previously thought was an impossible task of disposing of unwanted security tags, possible. We had 216 pallets, containing more than 2,000 ink-filled security tags sat in storage as we were unable to find a way to recycle or dispose of them safely – until Commercial came along. They tested samples and found a way to disassemble the tags, recycle some of the parts and arrange for any remaining bits to be sent to a power from waste plant to create electricity.

HOW YOU BENEFIT

Benefits that go beyond the planet and people

Eliminating landfill waste involves much more than just increasing your recycling, but it also brings many more benefits than simply the sustainable kind.
Brand & Reputation

Everybody understands that landfills are a last resort. By reducing your contribution, you’ll wave a big flag that is easily understood, and can attract customers, staff, and investors with similar values.

The Bigger Picture

On your journey towards net zero, you’ll find that Scope 3 emissions are the most difficult ones to tackle. Eliminating waste to landfill is one of the few clearly defined (and easily remediated) routes towards a lower Scope 3 emissions profile.

Knock-on Effects

The analysis and setup of a zero waste to landfill policy will automatically highlight other areas of focus that we can support with – like power reduction, renewable energy, greywater recycling and EV charging.

Compliance & Regulation

Our sustainability and compliance specialists work side-by-side across every industry, so we’ll be able to keep you on the right side of the regulators and away from any fines or penalties that could slow down your progress

Commercial deliver. We are fortunate to work with some amazing partners. Here are some examples of great things we hear every day.

The Tesco procurement team have been delighted with the way Commercial share our desire to entrench sustainability into our supply chain – we really are kindred spirits. Our ethical and sustainability policies are of paramount importance to our reputation and the Commercial team reviewed and approved all products in a short timeframe. Commercial are already committed to the ETI base code and are working on achieving EcoVadis accreditation for all suppliers on the Tesco account.
The new Walsall Housing Group office is a fantastic, fresh and modern workplace thanks to the wonderful work of the Commercial interiors team. They created a steering group to work alongside us to understand our demands and held regular meetings during the design process to keep us informed of the progress. Our desire was for a more collaborative space, with meeting booths and one-to-one seating, rather than traditional desks – and they delivered a fantastic final fit-out over the full four-floor building.
Each year, Commercial supplies accessory packs to graduate trainees at a leading accountancy firm, which are then picked, packed, and delivered to their home addresses by the Commercial Foundation. This not only guarantees that every new employee has the necessary equipment to be productive from their first day but also allows their IT team to focus on other responsibilities. Collaborating with the Commercial Foundation generates substantial social value returns on investment for the firm and contributes to improving the lives of the Foundation's volunteers.
Wollens have enjoyed a long-standing and fruitful partnership with Commercial because they are always introducing innovations and improvements to our IT environment. As the threat of cyber-attacks increases it was vital that we strengthened our capabilities for dealing with a ransomware attack with a cloud-based backup solution. Our solution means data cannot be altered or deleted, giving us a crucial way of recovering data to minimise any potential downtime and financial losses
Working with Commercial for our branded materials has proved to be effective and collaborative. The team is efficient and they listen to requests for improvements. Commercial has made branded goods simple.
As E-commerce in retail continues to grow, Commercial’s stock-management and fulfilment expertise has allowed a leading UK retailer to free huge amounts of warehouse space. Commercial took on the stocking of our employee uniform, transferring to a new supplier with the management of the supply being consolidated into their existing supply accounts. Not only did this free vital space in their distribution centre, the consolidated supply of all GNFR delivered significant delivery cost savings.
At JoJo Maman Bébé we are happy to work with the Commercial Foundation and support inspiring work they do to help disadvantaged young adults. Like us, the Foundation are a B Corp certified organisation that is proven to put purpose ahead of profits. We have enjoyed working with their volunteers to help with a mug-making activity. We are now working alongside them to create an introduction gift for our new employees, these include printed mugs, pens and notebooks.

Zero waste to landfill would create five times the number of jobs compared to traditional waste management.

INDUSTRY INSIGHTS

The changing face of waste management

When all roads lead to net zero, many of them need to start with waste management. As more companies get on board and as we get closer to 2050, new technologies and techniques are making it easier to make this transition.

Better sorting and processing
Efficient waste management plays a crucial role in addressing environmental concerns and supports your journey to carbon net zero. We will help you select recycling schemes that use more advanced systems – particularly those that have the ability to sort, process, reuse and recycle your waste. The easier it is to recycle, the easier it is to avoid landfill.
Circular economy
The idea of a circular economy – where waste is minimised through reuse and repurpose – is gaining momentum in the business world. It offers a reduction in environmental impact alongside opening new revenue streams and reducing costs. It’s a model designed to appeal to all, especially those companies wherein sustainability is not a key focus.
Proactive gains
Governments and local authorities are increasingly implementing policies that incentivise (or mandate) better sustainable practices. Companies which are proactive in complying with these policies and regulations can reduce the risks associated with non-compliance and capitalise on opportunities for green investments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our team is here to answer any questions you may have about zero waste to landfill. These are a few of the most common queries.

What does zero waste to landfill mean?

What does zero waste to landfill mean?
Zero waste to landfill is a waste management goal (and process) which seeks to reduce and eliminate the amount of waste sent to landfill sites. This is most commonly achieved through recycling, reusing, and repurposing.

What are the costs associated?

The costs will vary from one company to another, depending on the size and type of business. Generally the costs will include waste collection and disposal, the purchase of new equipment, training and education of staff, and the implementation of new waste management processes.

What are the legal requirements for waste management in the UK?

The Environmental Protection Act 1990, the Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2011 and the 2015 European Waste Framework Directive set out the legal requirements for waste management in the UK. These regulations outline the requirements for the collection, storage, transport, treatment, and disposal of waste materials, as well as the responsibilities of producers and holders of waste.

How do I get to zero?

The key steps are waste minimisation, sorting, recycling, reusing, and composting. Waste minimisation involves reducing the amount of waste generated and identifying ways to reduce waste at source, such as through packaging reduction. Sorting and recycling involve separating waste into different streams, such as paper, plastic, and glass, for recycling. Reusing involves using items and materials more than once, while composting involves the natural breakdown of organic materials.

Are there any grants available?

Yes, there are several grants available for UK businesses to help them achieve zero waste to landfill. These grants may be provided by local authorities, through national and European funding programmes, or from private organisations.

What are the penalties for failing to comply with waste management regulations?
