CARBON FOOTPRINTING CONSULTANCY

Knowing your carbon footprint is the key first step in reducing your environmental impact

Because what gets measured gets improved, if you don’t know your carbon footprint it’s impossible to identify where your areas of biggest impacts lie. Simply having knowledge of this can lead to natural positive behavioural changes and, at a macro level, completely revolutionise the way you do business.

But carbon footprinting is resource and time intensive, requiring lots of data collection, analysis, and calculations. Having computed our own footprint, along with plenty of other businesses around the world, we can compute your carbon footprint, get it verified, and start you off on a journey of carbon reduction

Your first-choice partner

Commercial’s passion, positivity and practices all add up to being a first-choice partner. There’s no green washing here.

Intimate experience

We’ve been a carbon neutral business since 2006 and we’re going to be Net-Zero by 2028. Having already significantly reduced our own impact, we bring a personal experience to your project and a wealth of hard-won knowledge in carbon footprinting and carbon reduction.

Planet-first policies

Our sustainability focus is part of every project we undertake for our clients, from implementing IT systems to fit-out and furniture.

Carbon footprinting is not just another service we offer, it represents the ethos that runs throughout our entire business.

Cross-divisional consultancy

It’s not only our sustainability experts who’ll be involved with your carbon footprint calculations. We’ll bring in data scientists, architects, and commercial consultants – who will innately understand every moving part of your business. That way, we provide grounded and realistic recommendations.

Handling complexity

There’s no way around it – calculating your carbon footprint is a difficult exercise. With so many factors and dependencies, which can change on a daily basis, and so much data to collect – having an experienced partner on side is the only way to achieve a true and independent assessment.

Knowing where to start

Sustainability is complex and broad, with competing and complementary elements. It can be easy to get overwhelmed and daunting to begin.

Data collection

It’s difficult, time consuming, and resource intensive to gather all the information for the calculation – often requiring input from every department of your business. Knowing which data to collect, and which not to, is key to efficiency.

Scope 3 calculations

The Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG) measures carbon footprint in three scopes. Scope 3 is the most difficult to track and improve, but where most of the impacts lie. Expertise and experience are essential to operate in this field.

Staff engagement

Bringing your people onboard is crucial to successful carbon footprinting because, firstly, it’s their activities that make up a large portion of your impact and, secondly, they need to buy-in to the project to create a culture of sustainability.

Strategy

Developing a carbon reduction strategy can only be achieved with successful and verified carbon footprint calculations. Without first doing this, and doing it well, your business will not be able to prove its environmental impact and improvements.

INNOVATIONS & INSIGHTS

Better businesses contribute to a better world

As we all become more aware of our environmental impact, and businesses realise they play a greater role than most, developments in technology and policy are keeping us accountable and making it easier to improve.

Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD)

The TCFD is a new force which mandates large companies disclose their ESG performance and climate-related financial risks and, from 2023, the same businesses will have to publish decarbonisation plans.

Science-Based Targets (SBTs)

SBTs are the verified targets you set, once you have calculated your carbon footprint. Without the calculation, you cannot play your part in the global transition to a Net-Zero business, or society.

Reporting regulations

The compliance landscape is becoming stricter and enforcing more mandates, including the reporting of Scope 3 emissions. Failure to do so will mean non-compliance, which could incur costs and prosecutions.

Market pressure

The growth of eco-ventures, eco-tendering, and growing demands from investors to disclose ESG performance, means that there will be a very real financial risk for companies which don’t pursue carbon footprinting and reduction.

Commercial deliver. We are fortunate to work with some amazing partners. Here are some examples of great things we hear every day.

The Tesco procurement team have been delighted with the way Commercial share our desire to entrench sustainability into our supply chain – we really are kindred spirits. Our ethical and sustainability policies are of paramount importance to our reputation and the Commercial team reviewed and approved all products in a short timeframe. Commercial are already committed to the ETI base code and are working on achieving EcoVadis accreditation for all suppliers on the Tesco account.
The new Walsall Housing Group office is a fantastic, fresh and modern workplace thanks to the wonderful work of the Commercial interiors team. They created a steering group to work alongside us to understand our demands and held regular meetings during the design process to keep us informed of the progress. Our desire was for a more collaborative space, with meeting booths and one-to-one seating, rather than traditional desks – and they delivered a fantastic final fit-out over the full four-floor building.
Each year, Commercial supplies accessory packs to graduate trainees at a leading accountancy firm, which are then picked, packed, and delivered to their home addresses by the Commercial Foundation. This not only guarantees that every new employee has the necessary equipment to be productive from their first day but also allows their IT team to focus on other responsibilities. Collaborating with the Commercial Foundation generates substantial social value returns on investment for the firm and contributes to improving the lives of the Foundation's volunteers.
Wollens have enjoyed a long-standing and fruitful partnership with Commercial because they are always introducing innovations and improvements to our IT environment. As the threat of cyber-attacks increases it was vital that we strengthened our capabilities for dealing with a ransomware attack with a cloud-based backup solution. Our solution means data cannot be altered or deleted, giving us a crucial way of recovering data to minimise any potential downtime and financial losses
Working with Commercial for our branded materials has proved to be effective and collaborative. The team is efficient and they listen to requests for improvements. Commercial has made branded goods simple.
As E-commerce in retail continues to grow, Commercial’s stock-management and fulfilment expertise has allowed a leading UK retailer to free huge amounts of warehouse space. Commercial took on the stocking of our employee uniform, transferring to a new supplier with the management of the supply being consolidated into their existing supply accounts. Not only did this free vital space in their distribution centre, the consolidated supply of all GNFR delivered significant delivery cost savings.
At JoJo Maman Bébé we are happy to work with the Commercial Foundation and support inspiring work they do to help disadvantaged young adults. Like us, the Foundation are a B Corp certified organisation that is proven to put purpose ahead of profits. We have enjoyed working with their volunteers to help with a mug-making activity. We are now working alongside them to create an introduction gift for our new employees, these include printed mugs, pens and notebooks.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you’re interested in discovering more about carbon footprinting, please get in touch, we’d love to tell you more.

What is a carbon footprint?

It’s the measure of your environmental impact, or more specifically the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions that you generate. Carbon footprints are typically expressed in terms of the amount of CO2 emitted per unit of time, such as tons of CO2 per year.

What are Scope 1 & 2 emissions?

Scope 1 includes your carbon emissions greenhouse gas from sources you own or control, like boilers and vehicles. Scope 2 emissions are indirect, like from the generation of purchased electricity.

Scope 1 & 2 emissions are the easiest to measure and reduce.

How is carbon footprint measured?

First you must measure the direct emissions associated with your direct operations, like energy consumption, and then your indirect emissions, like those generating in your supply chain.

What are Scope 3 emissions?

Scope 3 emissions are more difficult to measure and reduce, because they are indirect emissions that come from your essential operations and supply chain – like the products you use in your business, the use of products you sell, employee commuting, and business travel.
