Delivering an IT infrastructure fit for the future
- Virtualisation to enable growth
- A trusted partnership
- Improved functionality
- Strategy based decisions
- Resilience and future proofing
Part of leading international security group G4S plc, G4S Technology is a major business in its own right. The organisation’s commitment to quality and consistency has earned it a market-leading reputation across the world, and with new opportunities in new markets emerging all the time, G4S Technology is a company with a successful global future ahead of it.
International growth is great news for any business, but it also poses challenges including the great strain it places on IT infrastructure. A high proportion of G4S’s staff work remotely across the world – all of whom rely on an IT infrastructure which is hosted at the company’s headquarters in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire.
Paul Edwards, G4S Technology’s Vice President in IT & Business Systems took the decision to virtualise G4S Technology’s servers, recognising that this would be the only way to achieve the flexibility and security that was needed as the company continues to grow.
“At the time, all we thought we needed was for a supplier to come in, agree the best system with us then deliver it as quickly and efficiently as possible,” says Paul. “With Commercial IT Services, we got so much more than this – we found ourselves an expert, a trusted partner who will continually improve and add value to our business for years to come.”
Complete resilience and business continuity
Commercial IT Services worked with G4S Technology to create a new virtualised server estate, installing new hardware that offered improved functionality compared to the physical legacy system.
“Compared to our existing kit, the system Commercial recommended was better equipped, easier to manage and sped up the deployment of business critical applications across the office network,” explains Paul. “This in itself brought about cost savings in terms of management time and running costs.”
Although the virtualised server estate offered significant benefits, it was ultimately still located in one room – something which Paul and Commercial recognised as a potential business continuity risk.
After consulting with Commercial’s technical experts, a second phase to the virtualisation project began, with the aim of, making the system completely resilient to failure. To achieve this, Commercial built a second, back-up server room, using completely new hardware but built into the virtualised server infrastructure.
Expansion into new markets & new acquisitions
Following the server virtualisation project, G4S Technology has also teamed up with Commercial to commence the roll out of desktop virtualisation technologies across the business.
“Ultimately, Commercial’s solution means we can move into new markets, make new acquisitions and take steps to further expand the business, without worrying,” says Paul.
Beyond the provision of services
Paul sums up the benefits of a rewarding partnership: “With Commercial, it’s never been an all-or-nothing solution. They know where we have things covered and where we need their help, and make sure they work in a way that reflects this, injecting expertise where it’s needed to make G4S Technology work better as a business. That’s really what being a strategic partner is all about.”
