The Warc Ltd is an online business, giving its clients access to advertising best practice, with evidence and insights from the world’s leading brands. Warc helps businesses grow by featuring case studies and best practices from organisations like theirs around the world. As an online service, Warc has to be highly accessible, with no downtime whatsoever. Commercial helped the business migrate to a cloud solution to enable growth while ensuring an ‘always-on’ service for clients across the world.
With offices in Washington, Singapore and London and a global client base, Warc has to be able to ensure that both staff and clients can connect with its data from anywhere in the world, in any time zone.
Prior to working with Commercial, Warc had been using hardware based at a UK datacentre for five years – this IT infrastructure needed to be upgraded, but with strong growth in demand for Warc services, a key challenge was to understand how much capacity the business would need over the next five years.
The IT team at Warc faced two choices. They could either invest in more hardware and update their datacentre, or they could opt for an Infrastructure as a Service solution. At Commercial, we helped Warc move over to the cloud, provisioning the network and assisting with the migration to the new virtual solution. By carrying out a thorough audit of the existing situation, we were able to model the amount of capacity that was needed, and the likely requirements in the future. The system we put in place meant the Warc had no datacentre hardware to invest in and manage, while simultaneously giving it more control over its IT resources.
Moving to a cloud system also brings unprecedented freedom to the IT team at Warc. As the team no longer has to manage hardware or VMware, they are free to work on the business, adding value and innovation rather than dealing with problems or responding to hardware issues. “The move has been liberating for us,” explains Andrew Denham, CTO. “Now we can concentrate on what our clients need and introduce new functionality that helps us stand out.”
A compelling business case
Harnessing cloud also makes it easier for Warc to operate as a single global entity, despite the geographical distance between offices. Staff can access the same data instantly, wherever they happen to be. The solution keeps costs low, and means that there is no investment tied up in hardware that will eventually need replacing. With cloud, Warc has the flexibility to adapt and add services in the future, while being scalable for future growth too.
“For an online business like ours, high accessibility is crucial,” explains Andrew Denham, CTO. “Our customers include the world’s largest media and advertising agencies, and their expectations are rightly extremely high. Having cloud services gives us the flexibility to respond.”
