Fit for the future
Technology that's flexible, efficient and resilient
- VMWare host to virtualise the server
- Thin client devices at the desktop
- ‘Hot desking’ for the workforce
- Disaster Recovery for greater security
- Infrastructure fit for expansion
Healthcare RM was founded over a decade ago and, like most start-up businesses, the company’s IT requirements were limited. A handful of staff worked on four PCs supported by a single server, the hardware for which was supplied and maintained by a local IT company.
Alan Gellatly, Healthcare RM’s General Manager, was directly responsible for the business’ IT systems. He was acutely aware that as the business grew the demands placed on the IT system would increase dramatically, which could cause problems if the right infrastructure was not in place.
Healthcare RM wanted Commercial IT Services’ solution to address three key areas of priority, as Alan explains: “A system with inbuilt scalability, which could be added to and improved to meet our needs as the business grew and changed. Secondly, we wanted to cut costs. Our fleet of desktop PCs, which needed regular maintenance and our growing physical server network, were pushing energy and maintenance costs skywards. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, we needed resilience.”
Commercial implemented a three-phased programme to transform Healthcare RM’s outdated IT system into a new, virtualised infrastructure that delivered the flexibility, efficiency and resilience the business needed.
Commercial’s first move was to bring Healthcare RM’s network of physical servers onto a virtualised platform, putting the entire system onto a single VMWare host. As well as freeing up capacity on the server system and improving performance, virtualising Healthcare RM’s servers meant that in the future new applications could be quickly and easily added without the need for new hardware.
Commercial then began the process of replacing Healthcare RM’s desktop PCs with ‘thin client’ devices. The virtualised desktop solution meant that users could log on to their profile and applications from any computer with internet access, facilitating easy hot-desking and time and cost-effective remote working.
The third phase of Commercial’s programme was to build into Healthcare RM’s IT system complete Disaster Recovery capacity by creating a ‘spare’ server network that sat alongside the existing virtualised server.
“For a business like ours, one that deals with important and confidential healthcare information on behalf of its clients, the security and guaranteed continuity that this system provides is absolutely crucial.”
Fit for the future
There have been a number of big moves for Healthcare RM over the past 18 months and thanks to Commercial’s solution the transitions have been made without any major complications. Alan sums up the benefits of Commercial’s solution for Healthcare RM: “The flexibility to expand, and do so efficiently and securely, was really the whole rationale behind our decision to go with Commercial. We are able to continue to expand the business knowing that we have an IT infrastructure capable of handling such changes with ease – in every way, Healthcare RM is now fit for the future.’
